Resources for Victims of Medical Malpractice

As a boutique law firm, we have to be selective on the cases we can take due to limited resources. The laws in Texas also make medical malpractice cases incredibly difficult to pursue. They are oftentimes more expensive to litigate than the would settle for. While it pains us to have to turn cases down, we have compiled a list of resources for victims of medical malpractice that can help them get better care and remedy the current situation.

If the abuse occurred in a long-term care facility or assisted living facility, you can contact your local long-term care Ombudsman. These are state-run agencies that specifically advocate for the protection of elders or those in long-term care facilities. Each county has its own Ombudsman agency. You can find a list of Texas ones here.

Just because one firm can’t take your case does not mean you don’t have one. We recommend people reach out to the State Bar of Texas referral service by calling 800-252-9690. They have a much larger database of firms throughout the state and can help route you to someone who may be able to help. They also have a helpful list of affordable legal resources that can be found here.

You may want to file an official complaint that will be investigated by the state. There are several different types of complaints you can file:

  • To file a complaint against any facility or agency (nursing home, assisted living, hospital, medical group, etc.) that operates in Texas, you can turn to Texas Health and Human Services.
  • To file a complaint against a specific person (physician, PA, surgical assistant, etc.), visit the Texas Medical Board.
  • For a complaint against companies, agents, or adjusters for health, auto, homeowners/renters, title, flood, or life insurance, you can contact Texas Department of Insurance.

Finally, for help getting better care, we encourage people to contact the Texas Medicare Help Line (800-252-9240) or the Texas Health and Human Services Office of the Ombudsman (877-787-8999).

While we are unable to take every case, we try our best to help Texans get better medical care through the above resources. Powers Taylor remains committed to helping those injured in Texas. Call us today for a free case evaluation.
