For the past two years Families for Better Care has ranked Texas nursing homes as the worst in the nation. According to a recent report released by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 51 percent of the homes in Texas have a rating of 1 or 2 out of 5 stars[1]. The national average of low ranked nursing homes across the nation is 35 percent.

If you do not live for a metropolitan area the options for nursing homes are scarce. There are about 1,200 nursing homes and 98,000 nursing home residents, yet Texas has the fewest amount of 4 or 5 star nursing homes in the nation. In a recent article the Texas Tribune outlines the struggle that many Texans face trying to find a nursing home.

According to a recent report released by Families for Better Care up to 95% of nursing homes in Texas have been cited for a violation to either state or federal laws. On average a Texas nursing home resident will only receive 2 hours and 15 minutes of direct care a day, which is the lowest amount in the nation. For many in the state the only option is a lowated nursing home if they want to keep their loved ones close.
